Revelation 2:4, “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.” Here Jesus is speaking to the church of Ephesus. He starts by telling them how well they have done at standing on the truth and preserving in the face of suffering, but there is something He has against them. They have left Him as their first love. It wasn’t that they didn’t love Jesus, but they didn’t love Him first, above every other love. I don’t know if you have ever thought about this, but you and I have something in us called, “Our First Love”. Whatever ever sits in that seat of our heart controls all of our other loves and how we respond to them. What Jesus is saying is, “Sure you love Me, but your love for Me isn’t first in your life. Your love for Me isn’t controlling how you respond to everything else you love in your life.” I find it amazing that Jesus isn’t satisfied with their stance on scripture and their perseverance through suffering, He wants their heart completely. He won’t be satisfied with anything less. He must be our first love and what we love first and what controls all our other loves. He calls them to repent or lose their witness. The same is true for us who have left our first love. We will either repent or lose our witness. What are some of the most common things we put in the place of Jesus as our first love? It can be ourselves, our spouses, our children, our job, our church, our safety, our friends, our appearance, our blog, our facebook, our goals, our successes, and our money. None of these are bad in and of themselves, but our love for Jesus will control all of these if He is our first love.
